Remarkable facts about our Earth – the 3rd planet from the sun

Our world is a beautiful place and it has sustained everything living on it for millions of years. The Earth is a world unlike any other and is the only place in the known universe confirmed to maintain life. Our planet is the third planet from the sun and the only world known to support an atmosphere with free oxygen, oceans of liquid water on the surface and — the big one — life. Earth is one of the four terrestrial planet. Like Mercury, Venus and Mars, it is rocky at the surface.

Interesting facts:

  1. Human consumption of Earth’s natural resources more than tripled between 1970 and 2015. Our use of natural resources is expected to continue growing and more than double from 2015 to 2050.
  2. According to NASA, the world’s rainforests will be gone by 2100 if the current rate of destruction continues.
  3. There are more than 100 million pieces of junk orbiting Earth at about 17,000 miles per hour (27,000 km/hr)
  4. There is enough gold in the Earth’s core to cover the entire surface of the Earth in 1.5 feet of the sparkling mineral
  5. The Earth’s inner core is about the same temperature as the sun
  6. Earth is the densest planet in the Solar System
  7. Earth’s Amazon rainforest is home to one third of the planet’s land species
  8. The Earth’s plates move just a few inches a year—about as fast as a person’s fingernails grow. This continental pattern predicts that 250 million years from now, a new supercontinent will be born.
  9. The longest known cave system on earth is the Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. It stretches for more than 390 miles, and that’s just what has been explored. Scientists believe it may be over 600 miles long
  10. There is no solid land under the North Pole, just sea ice
  11. The tallest waterfall on Earth is Angel Falls, in Venezuela, which is 3,212 feet high. It is as tall as a 300-story building.

Telescope, astronomers have found more than 3,800 plants orbiting other stars, some of which are about the size of Earth, and a handful of which orbit in the zones around their stars that are just the right temperature to be potentially habitable.
