Fog-bows are rainbows’ cousins

The stunning white rainbow is an illusion created when sunlight shines through a bank of fog. The colour is lost due to the much smaller, tiny droplets of water in fog. Fog bows are almost white with faint reds on the outside and blues inside. The colours are washed out because the bow in each colour is very broad and the colours overlap.

The diffraction of light in the fog scatters the light more than it’s reflected, leaving only the brightest parts of the pattern: the white fog bow. also making the bow wider than the more colourful rainbows.
