Giving in to wanderlust

Since the beginning of time humans have been wanderers. As hunter gatherers they migrated with the seasons, surviving on their finds.

The reasons people leave their homes to voyage all over the globe are varied and very personal. Modern-day travel has made the journey luxurious and fast, getting to destinations otherwise unattainable. And rarely is travel about the destination. It is about the people, the traditions and culture.

Travel has the potential to be amazing, life-changing and eye-opening. Tourism is now the largest employer on the planet – though toursits are not always welcomed. Pictures of a wall in Barcelona, “Tourist Go Home”, or protesters in Palma saying, “Tourism Kills Mallorca”  touches an nerve in anyone whose summer getaway has taken them there.

Tourism accounts for 8% of the world’s carbon footprint – 4 times worse than previously thought. The simple solution is to stay put. But travel is one of the life’s great pleasures; broadening the mind and – when done right – can be beneficial to the local population. The key is in adapting how we choose to holiday to lessen our impact on the environment.

  1. fly less
  2. opt for trains over planes
  3. take fewer weekend holidays
  4. enjoy your own country
  5. don’t be a clean freak – ie: hotels give the option of reusing towels
  6. choose a green-hotel or green destination: Costa Rica, Vanuatu, Belize, Chile, Columbia, Uruguay and more
  7. diet – Einstein said “nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances of survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.” Producing meat emits way more carbon than the aviation industry, so you’ll be doing the planet a favour by going veggie.
